Below you will find sample calendars
developed by Texans for a Traditional School Year. The calendars
were designed based on the suggestions of parents, teachers and
school administrators. You will notice the bulk of teacher
work/professional development days are given at the beginning of the
school year. We have done this to allow teachers as much time
before the arrival of students to prepare their classrooms, their
materials and attend as many meetings as possible without classroom
disruption.
We have included calendars that call for
the mandated 180 days of instruction as well as 177 days of
instruction, due to the large number of districts that request a
waiver every three years to swap instructional days for staff
professional development. We have included sample calendars that
allow for shorter winter breaks and longer winter break, simply to
give folks using the sample calendars options.
We feel parent-teacher conferences are
very important to the academic success of the child. After all, for
children to succeed a partnership between the parents and the
teacher must be strong. After reviewing comments from parents and
teachers about conference days we felt it would best serve the
mission of parent-teacher conferences to provide conferences on
Saturday mornings as well as during early-release days during the
school week. This idea should allow for many more parents to
attend. And again, it is just a suggestion.
One of our sample calendars also calls
the final teacher work day to be on a Saturday. We included this
example because many teachers have told us they think it is silly to
return for one day to clean out their room. Of course, the work day
could be moved to the Tuesday after Memorial Day if this is the
desire of the teachers in the district.
Again, the calendars you are about to
view are simple a few of the many options available. If you
