Date Bill Passes House and is
Headed to the Governor
San Antonio – Successfully completing the
final vote, SB 108 – relating to the first day of instruction for
students, has passed both the House and Senate and is on the way to the
Governor to be signed into law.
The bill was modified in House Public
Education Committee to ensure parents and community members have a voice in
when school starts for their children.
The final version of the bill requires school
boards to hold a public hearing if they want the school year to begin before
August 21st. If the majority of testimony was in support of an earlier
start date the district would be able to apply for a waiver from the Texas
Education Agency
For more information on the negative impact
of the early-August school start date on teachers, families and students,
